On Saturday, April 2, at 2 p.m., join Richard-Yves Sitoski, Poet Laureate of Owen Sound, and former London, Ontario, Poet Laureate Penn Kemp as they bring together celebrated poets from all over Canada via Zoom in a special National Poetry Month online celebration of poetry in response to precarious events in the world.
In his famous elegy for W. B. Yeats, W. H. Auden said, “poetry makes nothing happen.” And he added: “it survives, / A way of happening, a mouth.”
Penn and fellow poet Susan McCaslin reflected on this in light of the current situation in Ukraine. McCaslin writes: “On Feb. 24, 2022, when the world woke to the shock of the catastrophic bombing of Ukraine, I asked myself and a few of my fellow poet friends how they would respond to Auden’s words, especially in these perilous times.”
Many of Canada’s finest and best-known poets answered the call, and we invite everyone to join us as we bring them together to read their reflections and their poems.
