Just over a year after the tragic passing of Sharif Rahman, the local business owner and YMCA board member will have an oak tree planted in his honour outside the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre.
This commemorative tree was suggested by a public member of the Community Services Committee earlier this year. After consultation with the Rahman family, it was agreed that the tree would be planted at the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre property. The location of the tree planting is significant as Mr. Rahman ran a small business within the building, was a YMCA member and sat on the YMCA Board.
An oak tree was selected as an appropriate tree for this tribute as it is a symbol of longevity, strength, stability, endurance, and justice. In addition to the tree, a small commemorative plaque will be installed with the tree.
A small dedication ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 26, at the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre, beginning at 2 p.m. Members of the public are invited to share in this celebration of Mr. Rahman’s legacy and contributions to the community.
