The provincial government is expanding palliative care access in Bruce—Grey—Owen Sound by adding a new hospice care bed at Chapman House Grey-Bruce Hospice in Owen Sound. This is part of a $19.75 million capital investment to create new adult hospice beds across the province, bringing the total number of publicly funded hospice beds in Ontario to 768.
“Palliative care is an important part of high-quality care in our community,” said Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Paul Vickers. “The Chapman House Grey-Bruce Hospice is a valued community asset, and I am grateful to Minister Jones and her team at the Ministry of Health for seeing the value this organization and facility provides to both residents at end-of-life and their families across Bruce and Grey counties.”
“Our government is ensuring people and their families have access to the comprehensive care they need in their community, close to their loved ones, at every stage of life,” said Sylvia Jones, Ontario’s Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “By investing in the expansion of end-of-life care in communities across the province, we are taking another step to connect Ontarians to compassionate and specialized care closer to home.”
“Today is another milestone day for compassionate, palliative care in Bruce—Grey—Owen Sound,” said Chris Cartwright, Chair of the Board of Directors of Grey-Bruce Hospice. “Chapman House was built with the physical footprint for a ninth bed, and I am grateful to the province for seeing our value by funding this service expansion at our facility.”
The new bed will come with an annualized $152,300 funding increase for the organization. Once opened, the new adult hospice bed will bring the total number of beds at Chapman House Grey-Bruce Hospice to nine. As a next step, the province is working with the organization to bring this new bed into operation.
Through the Ontario government’s ‘Your Health’ plan, the province is investing up to $147.4 million over three years to expand access to palliative care services, including increasing funding by 45 per cent for all hospice beds across the province.
