More Thoughts on Province’s Telesat Investment

Editor,

I recently came across a letter wondering about the recent government investment in Telesat and could not agree more. I was baffled at the amount of money pledged in competition to Elon Musk.

Putting that aside, what really struck me from the other reader’s letter was with regards to Bruce Street and their efforts to bring real high speed to rural cluster communities. I cannot think of much more (that) makes me happier than a local business doing such incredible, high-tech work. They are stepping in where the juggernauts have completely dropped the ball. They’re bringing service they (know) people desperately want. It makes me proud to live here knowing there are people with the initiative and know-how to tackle something like this.

I was absolutely shocked to read that there was mention of permitting issues. Can that be true? Would municipal government actually block their taxpayers from getting legitimate high speed internet from a local business?

If this is true, I have to ask: what on earth are you thinking? What would possibly prevent you from doing absolutely everything in your power to assist a local business in this space? Would you rather wait for Rogers, Bell, or Telus to clue in and fill their pockets a little more?

Whoever is making this decision is on the absolute wrong side of history here and I’d think they should be quite embarrassed.

It is the job of municipal government to serve their residents. If anyone from the municipality of Meaford is blocking the deployment of fibre internet to viable communities they are failing spectacularly on many, many fronts. I really hope that reader is mistaken.

Matt Legge, Meaford

Editor’s Note: I can’t offer any input regarding other municipal councils, but in Meaford over many years councils have been supportive (if not begging for) of improved internet access, and I certainly haven’t seen any roadblocks from this municipality.
