A mobile Computed Tomography (CT) scanner is now operational at Brightshores Owen Sound Hospital, providing patients with continued access to safe and effective diagnostic imaging while a new state-of-the-art permanent CT scanner is installed.
The mobile CT unit, housed in a specially outfitted trailer located in the Emergency Department (ED) parking lot, will be in place on a temporary basis.
“We would like to thank everyone for their patience and support as we carry out this important upgrade,” said Ann Ford, president and CEO. “We’re investing in the future of care at Brightshores, and this is one more step in ensuring our hospital continues to deliver exceptional care, close to home, for everyone in Grey Bruce.”
CT imaging is a critical diagnostic tool used across hospital departments, including the ED, inpatient care and outpatient services. It offers fast, cutting-edge imaging and enables doctors to quickly and accurately diagnose strokes, cancers, internal injuries, infections, and many other conditions. Brightshores introduced a second CT scanner at the Southampton Hospital in fall 2023.
“Having the mobile CT on site in Owen Sound is an exciting sign of progress as we work toward installing a new, permanent CT scanner,” said Kathy Beattie, Director of Medical Imaging. “This temporary unit ensures access to imaging services with minimal disruption during the transition.”
Members of the hospital team will be on hand to provide clear instruction and guidance to patients and families during the transition period. Some patients may be redirected to the Southampton Hospital for their scan, depending on their specific care needs. These decisions will be made in consultation with the care team. Stroke patients can continue to receive CT scans in Owen Sound, where Brightshores’ regional stroke program is based.
The new permanent scanner, once installed, will offer advanced imaging capabilities and improved patient comfort. The mobile unit will be decommissioned and removed from the site once the new scanner is operational.
Brightshores’ foundations recently completed fundraising for this new machine, which will also serve the regional stroke program.
“We are grateful to our foundations and the many donors for their support. These advanced tools support Brightshores’ efforts to deliver the highest standards of care and improve access for patients who need medical imaging technology in our communities.” said Brightshores.
