Meaford Should Draw on Home-Grown Talent

Editor,

Urban Meaford recently saw large crowds during Summerfest. Visitors and residents who attended seemed to enjoy activities throughout our urban area. People came from beyond our boundaries and the atmosphere along the waterfront and and main street was a friendly and welcoming vibe. Among the activities the poutine competition was a new feature which was very popular, the dog parade, car exhibits, and acrobatic air display also provided many positive comments.

A week later I attended a ‘Main Street’ presentation at Meaford Hall, put on by the Municipality of Meaford. I was surprised to find the featured presenters came from Michigan, USA. This gave the impression we needed help from further afield to put on a successful event.

We can always improve and ‘fine tune’ new events such as Summerfest and the Winter Market, but let’s encourage and harness local talent and let them suggest ideas for attracting more popular activities in the future. Perhaps the thrust of future events could feature historic buildings and waterfront – as the guests from Michigan suggested.

Congratulations to those who generated new ideas and those who volunteered their energies toward making them successful. We have a lot of ‘home grown’ talent so let’s strive for more activities to enjoy and let Meaford’s potential grow.

Christine Codrington, Meaford

Editor’s Note

For clarification, the ‘Main Street’ framework was developed in the USA, and has been adopted by municipalities across North America. Meaford’s Main Street organization will be a locally organized, citizen-led not for profit.
