Meaford Public Library to Host Award-Winning Journalist and Author

The Meaford Public Library will host a National Magazine Award-winning journalist, chef, and a debut memoirist, Bonny Reichert, on Wednesday, July 3, at 1 p.m.

Reichert’s debut book, How to Share an Egg: A True Story of Hunger, Love, and Plenty is a moving culinary memoir about the relationship between food and family – and substance and survival – from a chef, journalist, and daughter of a Holocaust survivor.

Aside from listening to her father’s stories of survival during his time at Auschwitz-Birkenau, Reichert avoided everything to do with the Holocaust. “I’ve always wanted to tell his story. But for years — for decades — I couldn’t find my way in. I just didn’t know how to write about him while still honouring my own experience of being his daughter.”

It was a perfect bowl of borscht in Warsaw that set her into the exploration of her culinary lineage. Reichert recounts defining moments of her life – a tale of scarcity and plenty – with food. It acts as an anchor, source of comfort, identity, joy, and a signifier of survival.

Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased in advance at the Meaford Public Library. Cash only. Ticket price includes a hot beverage and sweet treats.

Signed copies of How to Share an Egg will be available for purchase at the event, courtesy of Jessica’s Book Nook of Thornbury.
