There is a short road on Sykes Street just south of the bridge beside Paul’s Repairs that leads to the Meaford Lawn Bowling Club. Lawn bowlers gather there as many as five times per week to participate in a game played on grass resembling a golf green.
It is both fun and active, and thanks to sponsors like The Bay Family Dental, equipment and coaching are provided. There are also tournaments for the competitive bowlers.
The second tournament of the summer was held on July 3. There were ten pairs including one from Owen Sound and one from Chesley. The rest were MLBC members. The winning team was declared after three twelve-end games played under sunny skies and a delicious lunch.
Sandy and Eric Weatherall from Chesley were the winners. In second place was the Meaford team of Brad Tichbourne and Wendy Heatherington and in third was Meaford’s Jill Calvert-Goetz and Ricky Baird. Sandy and Eric are regulars at Meaford tournaments and are generally in the top three.
This is the second year in a row that they have won a local tournament. Sandy is also a member of the Provincial Championship Team that Jill Calvert-Goetz will be skipping at the Nationals in Edmonton in August. They are still looking for some financial support from community businesses for expenses not covered by the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association.
