Local Runner Helps Break National Track Record

On Monday, August 1, local grade 11 runner Kara Tichbourne was part of the record breaking team that shattered the national distance medley relay record (DMR) in Hamilton, Ontario.

The DMR consists of four runners competing as a team in the 1200m – 400m – 800m – 1600m events.  Tichbourne ran the third leg of the relay race as she took the 800m portion.

The four girls are all in the U18 category and competed against four strong university teams.  Their record breaking time of 11:54.71 minutes not only broke all Ontario records and the Canadian U18 national record, but also the U20 [12:05.42] and the U23 [12:05.42] national records by 11 seconds.  Of the five teams in the race, the second place team was a distant 20 seconds behind Tichbourne’s team.

Kara is now heading into grade 12 for her senior high school year.
