Libya Disaster Heightens Reader’s Concern About Pumped Storage Proposal

Dear Editor,

It has been devastating to watch nightly news reports from Libya where a massive rainstorm provoked dam failures releasing about 24 million cubic metres of water that destroyed a quarter of the city of Derna and killed more than 5,000 people.

What is it that Meaford’s council, along with provincial officials and the Department of National Defence, don’t understand about TC Energy’s pumped storage plan which would store virtually the same volume of water behind a 4.8-kilometer dam on the tank range directly above some 300 homes and farms?

Won’t someone wake up before it’s too late?

Clair Balfour, Meaford
