On Tuesday, June 17, the Meaford Lawn Bowling Club held its first tournament of the season. It was likely the hottest day so far this year, but the sun shelters made it tolerable for the participants.
An invitation was extended to district clubs, but only Saugeen participated with two pairs. The other eight spots were filled by Meaford lawn bowlers so it’s no surprise that it was a Meaford team that was victorious. And even better, Meaford pairs placed one, two, and three. In first place were Bill Baird and Maureena Boutari. Second place went to Brad Tichbourne and Rick Baird, and in third place, Bill Bouwman and Lynda Eagles.
“Many thanks to sponsors Cliff Richardson Boats and Scheifele, Erskine and Renken for making the tournament possible,” said the club.
Lawn bowling continues all summer, Monday and Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. These sessions are all ‘jitneys’, that is teams are made up from those present, so you don’t have to commit to a team or a session. However, new this year is ‘league play’ Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. Sign up now for July League play.
“If you are thinking of trying lawn bowling, you are not too late. Trying it is free. We supply the equipment and the instructors. All you need are flat shoes or sandals that won’t damage the greens,” said the club.
