Meaford is such a special place in many ways and the town’s growing support and enthusiasm for artistic, literary, and musical pursuits has helped make it become a burgeoning artistic hub. The Georgian Bay Community School has a first class music and orchestra program and every week in Meaford there are a multitude of events one can choose to attend or participate in.
For more than 50 years, the Goldenaires have brought their unique brand of music to the Municipality of Meaford. A non-audition choir, it is the love of music that brings the group together. There is something special about hearing a community come together in song and so many different voices join in harmony. In an era where social isolation is common, the choir is an example of how shared interests can bring people together and form a basis for building skills as well as friendships.
The Goldenaires work hard to perform two concerts a year, one at Christmas and one in the spring. There is something for everyone in their repertoire – somber and joyous, religious and secular. When they’re not preparing for a concert, the Goldenaires are giving back to the community by visiting and singing to folks in long term care and by raising funds for the music program at Georgian Bay Community School so that every student has an instrument to play which helps to create future musicians (and Goldenaires!)
Cheryl Ross has been the Director of the Goldenaires since 2022, after it had to be paused during Covid. Her work and dedication to the choir is remarkable, and it’s a delight to see her in action, conducting the many voices that make up the Goldenaires. In addition to all the very talented singers, there are three local piano accompanists – Helen Crowston, Jean Hudson, and myself, Sarah Patrick.
The Goldenaires are performing on Sunday, December 7, at 2 p.m., at Meaford United Church, which generously provides rehearsal and performance space. There is no set price for admission – donate what you can, if you are able to, and we are hoping to have a great turn out! All proceeds will go to support musical education in Meaford and there will delicious cookies and treats offered during the intermission and after the show.
Music is all around us – all we need to do is listen. Hope to see everyone there.
