GBCS Students Participate in Track & Field For First Time Since 2019

Last week, over 400 elementary students from Georgian Bay Community School participated in Track and Field for the first time since May of 2019.

On Wednesday, May 18, students in Grades 3 to 5 participated in events while teachers, parents, members of the community, and students in Grades 7 and 8 helped to lead groups of students and run the events.

It was a day full of excitement and joy as spectators got to watch large numbers of kids take on challenging races and finish them smiling. It was especially heartwarming to watch several Grade 7 volunteers step onto the track to help turtle some young ones and help them finish.

The following day, students in Grades 6 to 8 participated in their own track and field day. Teachers, parents, community members, and some wonderful Grade 5 students helped to run the events and keep the schedule rolling for these older students. There were some phenomenal feats of athleticism to be seen, yet it was really the sense of community that drew the most attention to this track meet. The high levels of participation, as well as the atmosphere of respect and encouragement for all athletes, made a lasting impression on all those in attendance.

All students who participated should be very proud of their efforts and they are congratulated for their hard work and determination.

Many thanks go out to Masse’s Independent Grocer for donating the water which was sold in order to purchase ribbons for the event. Special thanks also go out to all those who volunteered their time and efforts to make such a wonderful two days happen for these kids.
