The Municipality of Meaford has lowered the flags at the Market Square flag poles today in remembrance of the 215 Indigenous children discovered on the grounds at the Kamloops Indian Residential School in Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc territory.
The flags will remain lowered for 215 hours, representing one hour for each child lost.
“This is a heartbreaking story,” said Mayor Barb Clumpus. “It is appropriate for us all to show respect for those young lives lost, for their families, and for all of those still living with the consequences of the residential school system, and to continue the important work towards truth and reconciliation.”
