Born in Meaford, New Soda Company Launches

Gingerbug Brewing Company Inc. has launched the first in its lineup of probiotic soda pops – a wild fermented Ginger Beer – and will be making the beverage available across local retailers and restaurants this August.

The company was founded in January 2022, on a family farm in Meaford. Gingerbug aims to produce “approachable non-alcoholic, fermented beverages that anyone can enjoy as a healthy alternative to mainstream soda pop.”

The beverage will be the first of its kind in the country, and it officially launched with tastings and sales at three pillar, local retailers on July 29 and 30: Grandma Lambe’s, Goldsmith’s, and the Kimberley General Store.

“When it came time to launch, we thought back to the retailers who really supported us when we were farmers,” says co-founder of Gingerbug, Bren Silk. “And these locations are just three of the many retailers who champion local farmers and local products in our region. Grey-Bruce is thriving and we are thrilled to be launching right here in our own community.”

The fermented soda pop, which is being brewed in oak barrels in the company’s new microbrewery in Owen Sound, boasts only four ingredients, and is certified organic, certified raw,  and certified non-GMO. Hiring across all departments is underway, as well as plans to expand quickly across other regions in the province this fall.

“Fermented products are right on trend,” says Silk, who is a firm believer in the health benefits associated with fermented food and drink. “We hope to be the category leader of wild fermented sodas in Canada, making a fermented drink that anyone can enjoy.”
