At one time there were eight churches serving the people of Sydenham Township who lived north of Highway 26. Today there is only one – Trinity United Church in Annan. What became of those other seven churches?
On Sunday, May 19, the Friends of Leith Church are offering what they call a ‘Shunpiker Tour’ of the ghost churches. Between 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., cars and bicycles can register at the Leith Church (419134 Tom Thomson Lane in Leith) and acquire a map which will lead them to the sites where the seven churches once thrived.
At each venue a guide will be present, and a souvenir document will be made available to each participant, providing background information on the church, along with a photograph of what it once looked like.
Upon returning to the Leith Church, registrants can take a narrated tour of the historic church building and adjacent cemetery, and some light refreshments will be served. All this will be available for a fee of $10 (per car) or $5 (per cyclist). All proceeds are directed to the Leith Church Restoration Fund.
