While it’s known for hosting fantastic entertainment inside its doors, recently there’s been some extra entertainment outside the doors of Meaford Hall.
At the beginning of July Meaford Hall staff noticed a young seagull outside the box office entrance at the Hall. Concerned that the baby had fallen from its nest, a concerned citizen with a large fishing net scooped up the baby gull and returned it to the roof of the old fire hall where it was believed to have been nesting.
“The next morning when staff arrived at work there were two fledgling seagulls at the doors to Meaford Hall,” explained Hall manager Susan Lake. “Staff put some water in a large plastic container and left it in the shade by the old fire hall to ensure they didn’t dehydrate in the extreme heat. The young birds continued to hover around the building through last week and the parents swooped in to warn anyone that got too close.”
By July 9, only one fledgling was still seen around the building, and Lake said that the parents seemed a little more aggressive.
“It is believed that the other baby was killed in traffic over the weekend,” Lake suggested. “Then, on Wednesday (July 11), two people were unexpectedly hit in the head from behind by a seagull while entering Meaford Hall. Both reported being shaken and bruised afterwards.”
Lake says that staff immediately put a sign up on its doors warning people of the aggressive seagull.
“Facility staff also inquired with the local humane society if anything could be done but it seems we just need to wait it out,” said Lake.
