After overcoming some logistical hurdles, the popular Take a Kid Fishing Bass Derby returns to the Meaford Harbour on July 6 and 7.
The event falls on Ontario’s free fishing week, which means that parents won’t need to purchase a fishing licence in order to participate.
The Ministry of Natural Resources has worked with the event organizers in order to make the event a success and to ensure that participants act responsibly. The parent/guardians of the child fishing will receive a permit when they register for the Derby and must keep a copy of it on them at all times. This permit allows Derby participants to transport live fish across land to the weigh station.
“Only one fish is allowed per 5-gallon bucket and the Derby is open to the body of water that runs at the harbour up to the 7th line,” said organizers.
The Derby is open to kids ages 3 to 16, and participants will meet between the former Foodland building and the cottages at Tilly’s on Friday, July 6, from 4 to 8 p.m., and on Saturday, July 7, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Awards will be presented at the weigh station at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
