Local Music Shop Honours A Special Moment In Music History – With Scarecrows

The scarecrows have invaded Meaford again. This year’s theme is ‘Music’, and Kerry’s Computers and Music (Meaford’s only music store) made their contribution extra-special – a tribute to a moment in music history.

On January 30, 1969, the Beatles held their very last live performance together, on the rooftop of Apple Corps at 3 Savile Row, in London, England. Carting their equipment up to the top of the building, the concert was entirely impromptu and unannounced, and attracted a crowd of lunch-time spectators who enjoyed the 42-minute set. The local police, concerned about the noise and traffic disturbance, shut them down. This day marked the end of an era for many music fans; although they did record their album Abbey Road, the Beatles had pretty much called it quits by September of the same year.

Kerry’s life-sized scarecrows are dressed as authentically as possible, but the display holds the hand-made, grassroots flavour that also shows off the creativity and ingenuity that Meaford brings to its invasion each year. A monitor in the window of Kerry’s store shows a loop of photos of the concert; a poster of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ lyrics, and a Time magazine with George Harrison’s front photo lie in remembrance of the two members who are gone.

(And if you’re wondering why George was wearing a red shirt with sea-foam green pants … it was the 60s. ‘nuff said.)
