This year’s edition of Meaford’s Scarecrow Invasion & Family Festival will mark a special anniversary – 20 years of scarecrow fun.

In the coming days the 250 volunteer-made scarecrows assembled over the summer months will be put on display throughout the urban area of the municipality as organizers gear up for the September 30 festival.

The theme for this year’s festival is Scarecrows Celebrate 20 Years With Music, which should make for some fun and interesting scarecrow displays.

One of the popular components of the annual festival is the parade which kicks off the event. Scarecrow Invasion organizers are seeking parade participants. Those wishing to be part of the parade can obtain an entry form as well as a waiver form from the Meaford Chamber of Commerce. The deadline for submission of the forms is Monday, September 26.

“For all entrants, an identifying sign or banner is recommended so that spectators know who you are,” suggest organizers.

Parade Participant Checklist:

  • Read the Guidelines and share the information with members of your parade entry group.

  • Fill out the entry form and sign it. Please be sure to tick on the Entry form if you have music as part of your entry.

  • Read the Waiver and sign it. All members of your parade entry can sign one waiver – if you run out of signature lines, continue on a new waiver. Deadline for Entry forms and Waivers is Monday, September 26.

  • Staple the Entry form and Waiver(s) together, and drop them off at the Chamber of Commerce or Library on Trowbridge St. After hours, they may be taken to the Meaford Library and dropped in the slot. Entry forms and Waivers may also be emailed to Kristin Davies at kristdavies@gmail.com or faxed to the Chamber of Commerce at 519-538-5493.

  • If you are unable to print the attachments, Entry and Waiver forms are also available at the Chamber of Commerce or the Library.

  • Plan how and where your Parade entry group will gather together prior to the parade, e.g. Net Shed, McCarroll Park.

  • You will be issued a Parade Entry sequence number by email several days prior to the parade. If you miss the email, you can ask a Parade Marshal for your number on parade day.

  • The OPP Golden Helmets will be performing between 5:00 and 5:45 p.m. If you want to watch the performance, check in with one of the parade marshals and find your designated spot before 5:00 p.m. It is recommended that you watch from the north end of Sykes so that you can return quickly to your parade location.

  • The Parade starts at 6:00 p.m. sharp. Motorized vehicles and bands enter the Parade ‘Forming Up’ area via Bayfield and Sykes St (at Raper Park) no later than 5:30 p.m. Parade Marshals will direct you to your allocated place in the lineup.
