Grey Bruce Novel Marathon Returns on Labour Day Weekend

Do you have an idea for a novel? Is there a book inside of you waiting to be released? Would you like to have fun with other writers and support a great cause? There are currently four spots available.

It is back! The Grey Bruce Novel Marathon is returning this Labour Day Weekend. Twenty-five years after author Richard Thomas participated in his first three-day novel weekend at the Ginger Press Bookstore, he has dusted off his keypad and agreed to relaunch the local fundraising event.

The 2016 Grey Bruce Novel Marathon will be held from Friday, September 2 at 6:00 p.m. to Monday, September 5 at 6:00 p.m. throughout the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library. Participants will have seventy-two hours to create their masterpieces, which are usually about one hundred pages in length.

The event is a fundraiser for the Library’s Adult Learning Centres that assist local adults in achieving their educational goals and employment goals. Past Novel Marathons have raised over $10,000 to purchase resources, including GED, math supports, and English as a Second Language materials.

Four of the twelve writing spots are still available for the 2016 Grey Bruce Novel Marathon. Interested writers must be willing to raise a minimum of $250 for the Library’s Adult Learning Centres. Participants leave the weekend with a sense of accomplishment, new friends, and a draft of their literary creation.

The 2016 Grey Bruce Novel Marathon will be the first one in ten years. Author Richard Thomas, a veteran novel marathoner, has in the past used the event as a way to write the first drafts of his published novels, including many of his D.B. Murphy mysteries. He is looking forward to the Labour Day weekend.

If you are interested in reserving one of the writing spots or would like more information about the Novel Marathon, please contact Tim Nicholls Harrison, Chief Librarian/CEO at 519-376-6623 ext. 201 or email tnichollsharrison@owensound.library.on.ca
