The YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce is celebrating Healthy Kids Day by offering families the opportunity to drop by and enjoy their local YMCA for free on Sunday, May 1 between noon and 4 pm.
Parents are encouraged to bring their children to try the Owen Sound Y and participate in activities while learning the joys of living a healthy lifestyle, together, as a family. A variety of free, drop-in activities are scheduled, including a recreational swim in both pools, family fun in the gymnasium, a puppet show for kids ages 4 – 11 highlighting how to deal with mental health issues like anxiety and self-esteem, a life jacket and water safety clinic, a Kids vs Parents Rowing Challenge and Games of Skill & Chance. Full details are available at ymcaowensound.on.ca.
According to the 2016 YMCA Healthy Kids Day Survey, Ontario parents acknowledge that there are barriers keeping them from leading a healthy active lifestyle, such as: a lack of time (45%), work/life balance (39%), and energy or motivation (28%). Parents across Canada identified the same barriers to leading a healthy, active lifestyle.
With more than 33 percent of Canadian children aged five to 17 being overweight, leading a healthy, active lifestyle should be a family priority driven by parents.
“Your YMCA offers a wealth of programs to meet the unique needs of the Grey/Bruce region, with an emphasis on total health in mind, body and spirit. YMCA Healthy Kids Day is a national initiative to help break down the barriers preventing families from living the healthy, active life they deserve,” said organizers.
The YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce Health, Fitness & Aquatics Facility is located in the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre, 700 10th St. E.
