Daffodil Month a Crucial Fundraising Time For the Canadian Cancer Society

Staff

daffodi270lThe Canadian Cancer Society urges Canadians to join its team during April – Daffodil Month – a crucial fundraising time for the organization.

Every three minutes a Canadian hears the words, “You have cancer,” says Jennifer Wright, Fundraising Coordinator, Canadian Cancer Society.

“By helping us to raise funds during April you’ll be part of a vibrant team working to change cancer forever so that fewer Canadians are diagnosed with the disease and more survive.”

Volunteers to raise funds are needed now more than ever. Current statistics show that the number of new cancer cases continues to rise steadily as the Canadian population grows and ages. Almost half of all Canadians are expected to develop cancer in their lifetime and it is the leading cause of death in this country. While these statistics are sobering, the Society has contributed to making progress against cancer. Today, over 60% of Canadians diagnosed with cancer will survive at least five years after their diagnosis. In the 1940s, survival was about 25%.

We’re on an exciting threshold,” says Wright. “By volunteering for the Society you will be helping build a future where Canadians will no longer have to fear the word cancer, but we need your help to make it a reality.”

The Society has an urgent need for more volunteers to sell the daffodil pin and only requires 2-4 hours of your time. These volunteers will work in communities across Canada during April to remind Canadians to buy and wear a pin to show support for those fighting cancer. “A small contribution of your time will make a big difference,” says Wright.

The daffodil is a bright and hopeful emblem that says we’re all in this together and we won’t give up until all forms of the disease are defeated,” says Wright. “Watch for volunteers in your community starting March 31 thru until mid-April. Please take a moment to thank them, make donation and wear your pin proudly.”

We’ve reached a tipping point and now, more than ever, we need Canadians’ support,” says Wright. “Every donation made during our April Daffodil campaign will bring us one step closer to preventing cancer, detecting it earlier, improving treatments and helping Canadians live longer, healthier lives.”

Here is how you can support Canadians living with cancer this April:

· Buy and wear a daffodil pin throughout April.

· Attend a Daffodil month event in your community.

· Participate in a Society fundraising event in your community.

· Sign up to shave your head or donate your ponytail at www.cancer.ca/heroesforhope

Money raised during Daffodil Month helps the Canadian Cancer Society fund excellent cancer research, provide information and deliver programs and services to prevent cancer, to support people living with cancer and their families and caregivers right here in your community, and advocate on behalf of Canadians on important health and cancer issues.

Change won’t happen without you,” says Wright. “Donating to the Society makes you part of a vibrant cross-Canada team that is working to transform the way we understand this disease and live with it.”
