The Meaford & St. Vincent Community Centre and arena were bursting at the seams with energy and activity on the Family Day holiday, Monday, February 15.

The municipality provided a day full of family fun at the community centre that included public skating, activities for youngsters, and a meal cooked by the volunteers for the Golden Town Outreach.

While the much-anticipated Family Groove Dance was cancelled due to an illness, the Meaford Public Library filled the gap with some high energy dancing of their own before settling in for some ‘Hibernation Fun’-themed crafts and stories.

Dozens of residents took advantage of the two admission-free public skating sessions, and the afternoon session included a live DJ who had the rafters shaking.

famday003 270Councillor Jaden Calvert was busy in the community centre kitchen along with his fellow Golden Town Outreach volunteers, preparing a homemade soup that was served with fresh buns and sold by donation in support of the food bank.

The mid-winter long weekend has become popular with Ontarians since its introduction in February of 2008. To anglers, the weekend has also come to be known as Family Fishing Weekend, and Ontarians can fish without buying a licence over the Family Day weekend, though extremely cold temperatures appeared to have kept anglers away from Meaford’s inner harbour during this year’s long weekend.
