On Saturday, September 26, the Georgian Bay Coyotes hosted their annual Cross-Country Race in Honour of Adam Kulakowsky. The event was greeted with sunny skies and balmy temperatures — perfect weather for the pink shorts worn by many of the participants and volunteers in tribute to Adam.
Approximately 250 racers registered for the event, and the competition was strong thanks to the attendance of runners from the Saugeen Track and Field Team, the Owen Sound Track Team, the Collingwood Runners, and the many school teams who came out and put forth their best efforts.
Children from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8 participated in races divided into five grade groupings: JK/SK, Grades 1–2, Grades 3–4, Grades 5–6, and Grades 7–8. Everyone older than Grade 8 competed in the Open category, which proved to be a challenging 4 km race. Many personal-best times were achieved throughout the day, with runners encouraged by enthusiastic cheering from spectators and the fabulous race rabbits and turtles who helped keep them motivated throughout their races.
The event was offered free of charge, with an opportunity for participants and families to make donations to help cover costs. The generous support of our community made this opportunity a reality.
“Special thanks go out to Dr. Sauriol, Meaford Rotary, Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary, Scheifele, Erskine and Renken, Godard’s Independent Grocer, Grandma Lambe’s, A1 Toilet Rentals, and Olivet Baptist Church. Thank you also to the Meaford Scarecrow Invasion Committee for the use of your sound system, which helped create a high-energy and fun-filled day,” said organizers. “The volunteerism demonstrated by everyone involved was exceptional, and these efforts made for a high-caliber racing experience right here at home. It was a proud day for our community.”
