Grey Roots Museum & Archives has announced the unveiling of Community Canvas: A Roger Mooking Experience, a unique large-scale collaborative artwork that brought together professional artists, local community members and visitors to create a shared visual story of Grey County.
The completed artwork was revealed during a public celebration on Wednesday, August 26, at Grey Roots Museum & Archives. Guests had the opportunity to hear from the artists, enjoy live music and refreshments, and be among the first to experience the finished piece.
Led by acclaimed artist Roger Mooking, Community Canvas transformed a blank six by six foot canvas into a vibrant reflection of place and identity. The artwork evolved through multiple phases, beginning with historical imagery and archival materials, expanding into interpretations of Grey County’s landscapes, and incorporating contributions from visitors who added their own drawings and personal reflections. The final layer culminated in a striking portrait representing the collective spirit of the region.
“At its heart, Community Canvas is about connection,” said Mooking. “The artwork belongs to everyone who contributed to it. Together, we’ve created a visual record of the stories, memories, and perspectives that make this community special.”
Mooking was joined by Ontario artists Lonny Doherty, who contributed interpretations of Grey County’s natural landscapes, and Sarah Rose Irwin, whose portrait work helped bring the community’s collective identity to life.
The Community Canvas artwork reveal celebration is included with regular museum admission and free for Grey Roots members.
