In my last letter to this newspaper, I was asking someone to rationalize the Ford government’s planned deployment of Small Nuclear Reactor for Ontario’s energy grid. I stated simply that it was one of the most expensive and longest-to-deploy solutions for the Ontario electrical grid. Hence, I implied it was a poor choice.
Having read the Toronto Star article today (why Canada’s future must be nuclear) I find the explanation made by the author to make total sense. Nuclear is still the most expensive but the projected payback of developing a vertical economic system based on our in-the-ground high grade uranium resources, small nuclear reactor (SMR) development and available skilled trades make this energy solution quite viable: in fact, necessary. Lessons learned from other nations and our own experiences will enable on time completion and on budget or better costs. I apologize to minister Lecce and Premier Ford. My questions were answered and I have experienced valuable education.
This of course has no bearing on this boondoggle proposed by TCE. My arguments along with most others show that this project cannot be adopted. TCE argue that Bruce C reactor can make their project useful for energy storage. That “solution” works even better using modern battery energy storage systems that make more sense and require no extra transmission lines. If the Ford government wish to “bat 500” this is the chance. For the Feds and our DND, they would be “batting 1000”. Both levels of government will win by sending TCE home. Opportunity knocks but once!
