The Meaford Community Garden is entering an exciting new chapter, inspired by the
dedication, generosity, and spirit of the community.
Following weeks of collaborative discussions and partnership with the municipality, Meaford Council has approved the allocation of two acres of land behind Georgian Bay Community School, Knox Presbyterian Church, and MacDonald Furniture. This new location will provide a permanent home where the garden can continue to flourish and serve the community for years to come.
Once final agreements are completed, work will begin on relocating garden structures and preparing the property through earthworks and site development. The vision is to create a vibrant, regenerative community hub where people can gather, learn, grow food, and build meaningful connections.
Planning for the new site is already underway. Initial garden designs are being developed, and conversations with neighbouring organizations are helping shape welcoming, accessible pathways that will connect the garden to the broader community.
The new space represents an opportunity not only to expand food production but also to strengthen environmental stewardship, education, and community engagement.
While the transition to a new site is underway, community food production remains strong. This growing season, the Meaford Community Garden is partnering with Cirrus Hill Farm on Grey Road 7, where volunteers will cultivate two large rows dedicated to growing fresh food for local residents. As always, the harvest will be shared through donations to the local food bank and through the community fridge located at Bulk Bin.
In 2025, the garden donated 2,000 lbs of fresh produce to the food bank and community fridge, including lettuce, tomatoes, sweet and regular potatoes, onions, garlic, and much more. Beyond growing food, the Meaford Community Garden offers free workshops throughout the year on gardening, food skills, and sustainable living. Volunteers also work together to preserve the harvest for winter by making sauerkraut, applesauce, and other preserves.
This new chapter is an opportunity for our community to come together, create something lasting, and ensure that fresh local food remains accessible to everyone.
Residents are encouraged to get involved by attending work bees, connecting with fellow growers, and volunteering their time and talents to help establish the new garden site.
Whether you are an experienced gardener or simply interested in learning and contributing, there is a place for everyone. Together, we are planting the seeds for a thriving future—and there is always something growing at the Meaford Community Garden.
