On Saturday, June 13, six Georgian Bay Coyotes athletes took part in the Royal Canadian Legion District races. There are nine different districts across Ontario, and the Coyote athletes participated in both the District C meet in Cambridge and the District E meet in Midland.
All six Coyote athletes competed in the U14 age category, participating in a variety of events, including the 300m, 800m, 1200m, long jump, and high jump. These young and talented athletes competed with the hope of being selected to take part in Athletics Ontario’s Summer Games, which will take place at the end of July.
Despite facing extreme winds, warm temperatures, and lengthy delays, the team performed exceptionally well, setting many new personal bests. Each athlete also brought home one or more well-earned medals.
Avery McPhatter bravely took part in the high jump competition and earned a second-place medal for her efforts. Eve Tudor tried the 300m sprint and was rewarded with a bronze medal for her fast dash. Iris Herman had everyone taking notice as she took a commanding position in the 800m race and brought home a silver medal for her hard work. Madelyn Moores showed that distance racing is her domain as she fought hard to earn second place in the 1200m. Casey Mothersell was tactical and tenacious in his 800m and 1200m races, taking silver in both events. Caleb Cleland, the only athlete from the club to compete at the District E meet, also had an outstanding day, placing second in the 800m and first in the long jump.
These young athletes now anxiously await news from the selection committee to learn whether they will be chosen to represent their region at the Ontario Summer Games. Each athlete returned home with at least one medal and at least one personal best. Regardless of the selection outcome, they have much to be proud of.
