The best things in life are free, and that goes for the SweetStrings Community concert being held on Thursday, June 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the L.E. Shore Library Gallery in Thornbury.
Donations will be accepted at the door to help sustain and build SweetStrings programming. Under the umbrella of the Sweetwater Music Festival, this community group gives players who live and work in the area a chance to develop musically in an inclusive ensemble. If you are thinking of dusting off your violin or want to get back at the cello, viola or bass, then reach out. SweetStrings has players at a range of levels between intermediate and advanced.
Under the leadership of professional cellist Kerri McGonigle, the 20+ member string ensemble will offer up pieces by Vivaldi, Greig, and Purcell at this concert.
SweetStrings is in the midst of its second season. Based in Meaford, they rehearse weekly at Meaford United Church. The group has already played a concert at the Meaford Long Term Care home this year and will be performing as the ‘opener’ for the incredible professionals from the Sweetwater Music Festival on Saturday, September 19, at Georgian Shores Church in Owen Sound. Recently, the group was treated to a workshop led by violinist and Sweetwater’s artistic director, Edwin Huizinga. Lots of fun sharing and learning.
“Sweetwater is an incredible cultural jewel in Grey-Bruce and just offered two free events for school kids in the area. Hundreds of young people were given the chance to hear Juno award-winning pianist Philip Choi and internationally acclaimed cellist Guillaume Artus perform, learn and ask questions. These outstanding musicians also performed a fabulous sold out concert on Friday, May 22 at historic Leith Church,” said organizers.
There will be a concert in Thornbury as part of the fall festival; the grand finale will be at Grace United Church.
