Dear Editor,
Flyers have now been distributed indicating that TC Energy barge activity will take place in Georgian Bay from early June through September. Residents can therefore expect to see a renewed industrial presence on the water in the coming weeks.
This is not the first time drilling has occurred. TC Energy conducted similar work last year, yet there has been little publicly communicated information outlining what was learned or why additional drilling is now required.
At the same time, a federal impact assessment has been triggered, raising questions about how potential risks—particularly to nearby drinking water sources—will be evaluated and addressed.
In this context, residents reasonably look to their elected representatives —municipal, provincial, and federal and relevant authorities for clear, independent information and guidance. When visible industrial activity proceeds without that clarity, it raises an obvious question: who is ensuring that the public interest is being fully represented? who is in charge?
Providing transparent information about prior findings, current plans, and oversight responsibilities would go a long way toward addressing growing public concern.
Georgian Bay is a shared and valued environment. Accountability and transparency should accompany any activity that affects it.
