Meaford Lawn Bowler is a Provincial Champion

The Meaford Lawn Bowling Club has a provincial champion once again.

Jill Calvert-Goetz, former Novice Provincial Champion, teamed up as Skip, with Vice: Sandy Weatherall from Chesley, Second: Pat Kaufman from Hanover, and Lead: Katrina Carter from Hanover, to play in the Women’s Open Fours Ontario Championship which was held in Hanover.

Women and men played simultaneously in this qualifying tournament. MPP Paul Vickers delivered one of the first bowls at the opening ceremony, and since he is a Meaford bowler, gave the club’s representatives a special good luck wish.

The teams played a round robin in two pools of four but were only able to play two of the three games on Saturday due to a five-hour thunder/rain delay. The third game was played at 8 a.m. Sunday. Semifinals followed and then finals for gold/silver. The local team went undefeated in the round robin, facing C. Higgins (Midland Team), L. Seed and K. Smith. They won over R. McQueen (Sarnia) in the semifinals, then defeated C. Higgins again, for the gold medal. In the men’s Division Meaford was represented by Brad Tichbourne with a team from outside of the district. They finished fourth and unfortunately will not move on.

Jill and her team are off to Edmonton soon for the National Lawn Bowling Championships and they can use some financial help. The Ontario Lawn Bowling Association only partially covers expenses for the champions so the team is looking for local businesses to help out. Please email info@meafordlawnbowling. E-transfer is available.
