Obituary: Robertson, Michael ‘Mike’

Mike Robertson, aged 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 28, 2025, at Meaford General Hospital.

Born on March 2, 1943, in Wanstead, England, he was the son of Fredrick “Ed” and Sophie (nee Silverstein) Robertson.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a cherished father, grandfather, and friend. He was the beloved father of Lorrie Robertson and Kathie Lopez, and the proud grandfather of Natalie McKay, Emily Lopez, and Ryan Lopez. He is fondly remembered by Christopher Merrifield and Daniel Lopez.

Upon arriving in Canada with his family in 1952, he attended school at Jarvis Collegiate Institute in Toronto. He then settled in Thornbury with his parents. Mike worked for over 40 years at Teledyne and enjoyed discussing politics, sharing his views through publishing his thoughts in the local Meaford paper.

He had a deep love for singing and performing, with a special fondness for Johnny Cash. His talent for working with his hands and his craftiness, including a passion for model trains, were well-known. He brought joy and laughter to those around him with his great sense of humour and “professional-level joke-telling”. The charitable contributions he made and participated in speak for themselves, as well as his love for animals, which was a testament to his kind and compassionate nature. He always showed care and affection to every creature he encountered. The truth be told, he loved most animals more than people.

For the last ten years of his life, he shared a special bond with his best friend and companion, Doris Gamble. To those who knew him, he was a caring and strong individual who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, and his legacy of kindness, humour, and love will never be forgotten.

A celebration of Mike’s life will take place in The Galleries at Meaford Hall on Friday, April 11, 2025, from 12 noon until 3 p.m., tributes will be shared at 1 o’clock.

As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Grey Bruce Animal Shelter would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON, N4L 1B9, to whom arrangements have been entrusted. www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca
