In 1974, the Chi-Cheemaun made its first run transporting passengers and cars from Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula to South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island.
Now, 50 years later, historian Richard J. Thomas chronicles the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of this remarkable ship, which remains in service to this day, in his newest book: The Jewel of Georgian Bay: Celebrating 50 Years of the Chi-Cheemaun. Over 80 of the Chi-Cheemaun‘s builders, sailors, and travellers have also contributed their memories and photographs to make this book truly a local community project.
Author Richard J. Thomas will be at The Ginger Press in downtown Owen Sound to talk about and sign copies of The Jewel of Georgian Bay at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13. There is no charge to attend. Autographed copies ($29.95) can be reserved at 519-376-4233 if unable to attend. The Jewel of Georgian Bay is published by The Ginger Press, a regional publisher of more than 150 books about the Grey-Bruce-Owen Sound region.
