Curious About Quilting?

If you’ve always wanted to try quilting, if you’re curious about what it’s all about, or if you’re just looking for a social group, now is the time to join the Georgian Quilters Guild. They meet once a month at Meaford Hall for fun, fellowship, and of course, quilting.

The Georgian Quilters Guild began in 1996 in response to an advertisement in the newspaper. Twenty-five interested individuals came out for the first meeting on October 10, and the group has been going strong since.

At the monthly meetings, quilters share ideas, work on projects together, learn and experiment with new techniques, and enjoy quality time together. Traditional quilts aren’t the only things they make either, they also craft bags, purses, place mats, and wall hanging quilts. Their work includes the Meaford 150 anniversary quilt on display at the Meaford Public Library and the two Dresden Plate quilts at Meaford Hall, which were a fundraising effort for the Hall’s 2006 restoration.

Community outreach has always been a focal point of Georgian Quilters Guild. They have donated many quilts to raffles and auctions for causes like the Kindness Makes Cents fundraiser, Participation Lodge, and The Quilt for a Cure Cancer Research initiative. From 2019 through June of 2023, they donated 157 quilts to people in the community and organizations like the Oncology Department at Grey Bruce Regional Hospital, My Friend’s House, and Home Horizons. They have also given Christmas stockings and place mats to the Day Away Program at Meaford Community Care. They recently also donated quilts to a family of five in Nova Scotia (formerly of Clarksburg) who lost everything in a wildfire.

The Georgian Quilters Guild welcomes all skill levels. It is a great place to learn if you have never quilted before and a place to share your knowledge if you have an advanced skillset. They often have guest speakers and will be hosting Susan Sankey on September 21 for their first fall meeting. Georgian Quilters is a place to gather for fellowship and enjoy a fun, social group invested in the community, each other, and quilting.
