Obituary: Coyne, Erika Emma

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Erika Emma Coyne (nee Hoch) on Monday, October 17, 2022, in her 85th year.

Dearly beloved wife of Dale Coyne for 59 years. Proud and loving mother and mother-in-law of Curtis and Susan Coyne. Beloved Oma of Mitchell and Leah and special step-grandmother to Kellan (Kailey).

Erika is survived by her brothers, Siegfried (Doris), Joachim (Monika), and Lothar (Martina), all of Germany. Sister-in-law of Inez Tabler (Joe), Darlene Coyne, all of Alberta and Barb Paulson of Ottawa. Lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Erika is predeceased by her parents, Marie and Rudolf Hoch and her brother, Gerhardt.

Erika was born in 1938 in Altefeld, Germany and immigrated to Canada upon her marriage to Dale. Erika had many passions in life. She loved going for daily walks on the Georgian Trail, cultivating and tending to plants of any kind, knitting, preserving, and cooking, to name just a few. She was an avid member of the Red Hat Society for many years and devoted much of her time to volunteering at various institutions. She handknit countless pairs of slippers and mittens and numerous scarves that she would then donate to local causes. Erika loved travelling and she and Dale had many adventures together. Next to her family, her greatest loves were the pets she had over the years and she will be truly missed by her cat, Sasha (aka Stink). Erika will always be remembered for having mints in one pocket and a chestnut in the other, just like her mother. The memories that we have of Erika will be forever cherished.

We wish to thank the amazing staff of Lee Manor for the outstanding care given to Erika. They always treated her with compassion and dignity and we will be forever grateful. Thanks also to Tamara Peters of the Alzheimer’s Society for guiding us through the early stages of this difficult journey.

Erika will be laid to rest at a later date at the National Military Cemetery of the Canadian Armed Forces in Ottawa.

As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON, N4L 1B9, to whom arrangements have been entrusted.
