The final long weekend of summer was a busy time in the Municipality of Meaford with a number of events taking place including the Fall Fair, the Meaford International Film Festival (MIFF), and even a pool party for pooches hosted by the Beautiful Joe Heritage Society at the Blue Dolphin public swimming pool.
Kicking off the weekend, the historic Meaford & St. Vincent Fall Fair saw a steady stream of visitors passing through the fairground gates to take in a showcase of Meaford’s agricultural heritage. For more than 165 years, Meaford’s Fall Fair has celebrated agriculture and community, and organizers were thrilled with this year’s turnout to the event.
From the farm fields to the Meaford Hall Opera House, the Labour Day weekend had something for everyone, including the 16th edition of the Meaford International Film Festival which once again provided four nights of films, dinners, and parties for cinema lovers.
While film buffs were enjoying MIFF, dog lovers could be found at the Blue Dolphin public swimming pool, where the popular Pooch Pool Party was once again hosted by the Beautiful Joe Heritage Society. The event provides an opportunity for canines and their owners to enjoy a day at the pool, and there was no shortage of smiles to be found poolside as the pooches enjoyed the water fun.
Meaford’s Rotary Club held a successful fundraiser barbeque in support of Meaford’s hospital as part of a customer appreciation day event hosted by the owners of Godard’s Independent Grocer. Saturday’s weather was perfect for enjoying a burger with friends with a festive atmosphere, and a good cause to support.
In addition to the many events being held in Meaford, there was also plenty of activity at the boat launch as roughly 4,500 anglers took part in the 34th annual Salmon Spectacular event, and many used Meaford’s boat launch to get out on the bay in search of a large catch.
A busy and enjoyable Labour Day weekend in Meaford, as summer draws to a close, students return to school, and the warm summer air slowly transitions to cooler autumn air en route to the chilly winter months ahead.
