Letter to the Editor
Editor,
Was disappointed in the recent poll in TMI that asked the question: “Are you in favour of the proposed development of a section of buildings on Sykes St.”
The two permitted responses were:
Yes–we need to build for the future, or, No- we must preserve our heritage.
The problem with these responses is that they create a false dichotomy–that is, they present two possibilities that stand in opposition to each other when there is no logical reason for them to be opposed.
I am in favour of both some re-development AND preservation of heritage. How do I vote in this poll?
What should happen is that Mr. Toncic and the Municipality should enter into negotiations and come up with a proposal that respects Meaford’s heritage and that meets Mr. Toncic’s bottom line. There would be compromise on both sides.
I suspect that this more moderate position reflects the view of many Meaford citizens. Unfortunately it cannot be expressed in the “either…or” structure of the poll.
