As they have for the past 34 years, hundreds of thousands of people across Canada are expected to participate in the annual Terry Fox Run on Sunday, September 20 to mark the event’s 35th year.
The Meaford edition of the run will be held at the Rotary harbour pavilion beginning at 9 am on September 20. Returning as the event coordinator this year is Haley Ellis, who has been pulling double duty leading up to this year’s race, as she also started her first year of university this month.
For those who attend the event, there will be a silent auction table, hot dogs courtesy of Bill’s Valu-mart, water from Muxlow’s and apples from Barrett’s orchards.
As they did last year, Meaford’s Simply Unique flower and gift shop will be providing yellow balloons to be used as route markers for the run, which will again start off from the Rotary harbour pavilion.
In what will likely be his final Meaford-to-Collingwood and back bicycle ride on Terry Fox Run day is Meaford resident Hugh Timmerman. The 84 year-old has put more than 40,000 kilometres on his bicycle over the last 15 years, with nearly all of those kilometres pedalled on the Georgian Trail between Meaford and Collingwood, including his annual Terry Fox rides from which he has raised several thousand dollars for cancer research in recent years.
The Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $550 million in its first 34 years, the bulk of which comes from the more than 9,000 Terry Fox runs that are held each year across Canada and around the world.
The Terry Fox Foundation is independent from any other cancer fundraising group. The organization does not accept any corporate sponsorship, making it truly independent.
Participants can register at the pavilion beginning at 9 am on Sunday, September 20, and the event will run until 2 pm.
There is no entry fee and no minimum pledge, so the event is open to anyone, no matter if they have raised a few dollars or several hundred of dollars.
