Georgian Bay Secondary School’s Born to Read program is moving ahead with plans for their first Family Literacy Day on May 20.
“We are moving forward with the Born to Read “Gotta Keep Reading” Family Literacy Event, and we are appealing to businesses to support the day through a donation that would sponsor a gift basket of books for the free giveaways. Each basket will have a large tag with the name of the business/organization who provided the donation so that there is some advertising in exchange for the donation,” explained GBSS teacher Amy Teed-Acres.
Teed-Acres told The Independent that a donation of $50 will purchase an entire set of books that will be included in a gift basket. Children who attend the literacy event will be given a raffle ticket which they can enter into any one of the many gift baskets of book sets.
The organizers are also hoping that local businesses to decorate their store windows for the literacy event on May 20. The theme is “Gotta Keep Reading”, and it encourages reading to and with children from a young age so that they will be lifelong learners.
The Born to Read group has teamed up with the Meaford Public Library and Meaford Hall to present an evening of literary fun at the Hall on May 20 from 5 to 7 pm. Among the activities will be a chance to meet with Werner Zimmerman, the winner of the 2010 Best Picture Book for Porcupine and a Pine Tree, kids’ games and activities, a Me to We book exchange, free literacy and family resources from the Meaford Public Library, Keystone, and the Early Years Centre. There will also be draws for books, gift baskets, and other prizes. The little ones will also enjoy the chance to meet Franklin the Turtle, and flash mob productions of Gotta Keep Reading by MCS and SVE students.
To donate, or participate, contact Amy Teed-Acres at GBSS (538-1680) or email amy_teed-acres@bwdsb.on.ca to sponsor a basket. Cheques can be made payable to GBSS with “Born to Read” in the memo line.
