Obituary: Woods, Mary Joan

Obituary

June 29, 1931 – Peterborough, Ontario

April 23, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts that our family announces that we have lost one of our dearest treasures – wife, mother, and nana – Mary Woods. Mary passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2020, at the age of 88.

Mary lived her life to the fullest, with enthusiasm, class, style, and determination. She had an eye for design and her creativity shone through during the Town of Meaford’s ‘Scarecrow Invasion’. Each year, she could not wait to volunteer with her friends to make the Scarecrow season even better than the last. Her dedication to giving back to the community was recognized in 2018 when she received one of Canada’s most prestigious awards, the Governor General’s Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. Mary loved her family deeply and spent many unforgettable summers with her husband, children, grandchildren, and friends at their North Bay cottage. She led by example, exuding grace, perseverance, and courage.

Mary leaves behind her best friend and husband of 65 years, Ken Woods, and their children, Lisa (Don) and Thomas (Dianne). She was a proud Nana to four wonderful grandchildren, Dana, Heidi (Andrew), Graham, and Evan; and was recently blessed with a great-granddaughter, Astrid. She is fondly remembered by her niece Gail Clarke (Allan), goddaughter Lisa Boat (Ken), and Linda Dorsett.

Mary was predeceased by her parents Harry and Elsie Dorsett, her siblings Donald Dorsett (Violet) and Betty Welch, and nephew Jim Dorsett.

A Celebration of Mary’s life will follow at a time when the world allows us to gather together again. During this time of sorrow, we take comfort knowing that Mary is already making heaven a much more beautiful place. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed on Mary’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
