Treats and snacks are words synonymous with junk food in today’s society. When it comes to our pets, many consumers do not give pet treats a second thought. While we are in control of the ingredients we put into our own bodies, the same cannot be said for our pets. Our beloved furry friends rely on us to make good decisions for them, especially those surrounding their health.
All loving pet owners want their pets to live long, happy, and healthy lives. There are many ways in which we can not only eliminate undesirable ingredients from our pets’ diets, but we can choose to include ingredients that actually make them stronger, and healthier! Checking the ingredients on their treats is one of those ways.
Many responsible pet owners give serious consideration when choosing the right food for their pet. They may look at a brand’s overall nutritional profile, quality of ingredients, and more. Yet while all this is going on, awareness pertaining to healthy treats and snacks is often overlooked. Not that there is anything wrong with a junk food treat; it’s all about balance. Is it okay to have a chocolate bar here and there? Sure. Is it okay to have one every day? Of course not. Balance.
Let’s have a look at the differences between what I consider to be a junk food treat and a health food treat for pets.
Firstly, it’s all about making informed decisions. Because we are discussing consumables here, having a sound understanding of ingredients is of significant benefit.
Before you purchase any treat for your pet, read the packaging. Check the ingredients, and ask yourself if what you’re reading is conducive to a well-balanced, healthy lifestyle. Where is the product made? Do your best to avoid any pet consumables made in China, as that is where the vast majority of pet product recalls come from. Look for healthy, whole ingredients like fresh meats, fruits, and veggies. When in doubt, go with a product manufactured and sourced in Canada.
Pet treats and snacks found in grocery and discount stores tend to be the worst offenders. There are still healthy choices to be made there, however the options are overwhelmingly less than desirable. These types of treats usually contain animal by-products, unnatural dyes, synthetic chemicals, and fillers, which can have harmful effects on our pet’s health. Skin and coat problems, ear infections, and digestive issues are common. With prolonged exposure, they may contribute towards long-term health problems.
Snacks and treats should be a supplement to your pet’s diet, not a burden on it.
Fortunately, there hasn’t been a better time to be a well-intended pet owner than now. With the ever-growing health food segment of the pet industry, options are vast and varied. From freeze-dried raw treats, to crunchy cookies, snack time can still be fun, tasty, and nutritious!
To satisfy your dog’s inner carnivore, freeze-dried or dehydrated treats are ideal. Freeze-dried treats like chicken breast, duck, turkey, or seafood are loaded with meaty goodness. They are perfect for dogs on limited ingredient diets, fussy dogs, and those with sensitive tummies. Dehydrated treats also make great training treats; they are super tasty! They are among your best options for healthy cat snacks, too.
For dogs in need of a good crunchy biscuit, it’s best to go grain-free. Grains are not essential to a dog’s diet, and are often the cause for dietary allergies, leading to ear infections and skin and coat problems. Peanut butter is definitely a canine favourite, but there is a growing demand for more novel flavours like duck, venison, and even crickets!
Regardless of what treats you give your pet, just remember to feed in moderation. Excessive snacking is one of the biggest reasons why more than half of all domesticated dogs and cats are overweight or obese. Choosing healthy snacks for our pets is an important choice to make, however it’s equally important to know how much is too much.
Along with proper exercise and offering your pet a nutritious diet consisting of healthy foods and treats, you are doing more than you know towards improving their quality of life.
