On the morning of Monday, June 18, Meaford Mayor Barb Clumpus and Councillor Jaden Calvert raised the Pride flag at Market Square in honour of Pride Month.

This is the first time any commemorative flag has been flown in the municipality, and Mayor Clumpus told The Independent that she couldn’t think of a better flag to begin with.

It’s the first time we’ve raised any kind of commemorative flag. We’ve had requests in the past, but we didn’t have a policy for this, but when this request came forward, we decided at council that this would be a good time to look at a policy that would encompass all of the requests that we get,” said Clumpus. “The month of June being Pride month, we felt that it was symbolic to have this as our first flag raising, and also I think it’s important to recognize the inclusivity, the respect, and the acceptance of all in our community.”

The colors on the Canadian Pride Flag represent life (red), healing (orange), sun (yellow), nature (green), harmony (blue), and spirit (purple), and are concepts celebrated at Pride celebrations around the world.
