Young Curlers Carry Scarecrow Pride to OttawaFour Georgian Bay Community School (GBCS) students dazzled audiences during the Pinty Elementary School Curling Bonspiel in Ottawa recently with their scarecrow hats, kazoos, and a banner that showcased Meaford as the home of the award-winning Scarecrow Invasion and Family Festival.

Head Scarecrow Marilyn Morris applauded these four young people for choosing the Meaford Scarecrow Invasion and Family Festival to showcase their pride in their community.

It was awesome to have four of our GBCS students excited to portray their community as home of the Scarecrow Invasion and Family Festival,” she said. “They happily identified as scarecrows at the tournament, and seemed to intrinsically understand the event’s value to their hometown, its fun, its community spirit-building and its promotional benefit to Meaford. We applaud their choice to ‘go scarecrow’ in Ottawa.”

Abby Johnston, Ally Pendleton, Bryden Lindsay, and Shelby Almas, with coach Julie Pendleton, competed in the Pinty bonspiel on April 5-8.

Each team was invited to create a banner showcasing their school and their community for the opening ceremonies. The GBCS team banner was honoured with third-place prizes. The invasion executive sent 100 scarecrow kazoos with the team as friendship gifts for fellow bonspiel curlers. “The kazoos were a hit,” said Ally.

Ambassadors like Abby, Ally, Bryden, and Shelby are part of Meaford’s future, according to Morris. “It is most gratifying to think that these young people, and many other students like them, will eventually have the future of our event in their capable hands,” she said. “The event will flourish!”
