With the mid-April snow and ice storm experienced in Meaford and throughout Ontario in the past week, organizers of the annual Earth Week clean-up of Memorial Park have decided to postpone the event until Saturday, May 5, the date of the community-wide clean-up initiative.
More snow and rain is in the forecast for the coming week making it impossible to conduct a cleanup, particularly in the forested areas of the park where volunteers also plan to dig up some invasive plant species.
By postponing the park cleanup until May 5, it is hoped the snow will have melted and the ground will have time to dry out.
The May 5 coordinated cleanup of public spaces throughout the municipality is an initiative of the Economic Development Advisory Committee’s ‘first impressions’ working group, and will bring together hundreds of volunteers across the municipality. The clean-up will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, at the Rotary Harbour Pavilion. The committee estimates that between 200 and 300 volunteers will participate in the cleanup. Volunteers participating in the Memorial Park Clean-up will meet at the park.
“It’ll truly be a day dedicated to community clean-up!” said Marissa Dolotallas of the Friends of Memorial Park, who co-host the Earth Week Memorial Park clean-up with The Meaford Independent.
