Brush Up on the Facts: Keep Kids’ Teeth Healthy is the message for April and Oral Health Month.

Geared to parents, the campaign stresses the importance of dental health on kids’ overall healthy growth and development and lets parents know that free dental care is available to eligible children and youth 17 years and under.

Good oral health is important for a child’s self-esteem, sense of well-being and overall health. Cavities can be painful, making a child unable to chew foods properly and may affect their ability to pay attention at school or enjoy activities.

When kids have dental pain, it is more than just having a cavity.” says Heather Prior, Dental Hygienist with the Grey Bruce Health Unit. “Healthy teeth are an important part of their overall health. That’s why we want everyone to Brush Up On The Facts to help keep kids teeth healthy!”

It is important for children to have a dental check-up at least once a year, to prevent problems from starting. Get dental concerns checked immediately, regardless if it is for ‘baby teeth’ or ‘adult teeth’. Small steps today can be taken to help dental issues including limiting sugary snacks and drinks and helping children to brush and floss properly.

You can visit the websites for the Ontario Association of Public Health Dentistry, OAPHD, or the Grey Bruce Health Unit for more information and answers to all of your dental questions, including if your child is eligible for free dental care.
