As the warm months begin to fade into the cold months, some might be looking for a winter activity, and the Meaford Curling Club is hoping to help.
Newcomer registration for all ages takes place tonight (Thursday, October 9) at the curling club. There are special rates for beginners which include an introductory clinic that will teach newcomers the rules and nuances of the game.
David Blackburn of the Meaford Curling Club told The Independent that curling is a sport that is very accessible, and can be played leisurely or competitively. And then of course there is the infamous social aspect of curling that often sees players relax in the lounge after some fun on the ice.
The Meaford Curling Club was formed in 1876 and joined the Ontario Curling Association in 1877. While the original club was located at the same location as the current club (130 Collingwood Street), for many years the club operated from a building by the Big Head River and used natural ice until 1951 when an ice plant was installed.
Curling says Blackburn is fun, affordable, and participants can adjust their level of play to suit their own physical abilities and limitations.
A question and answer session will be held from 6 pm to 7 pm on October 9, followed by registration from 7 pm to 9 pm.
For those unable to attend tonight’s session, a second registration and question and answer session will be held on October 14 from 7 pm to 9 pm.
There is also a beginners clinic scheduled for Sunday October 26 from 1 pm to 3 pm.
