Call For Volunteers to Help Move Meaford Toward a Zero Waste Economy

Staff

zerowaste270A group of residents interested in moving the Municipality of Meaford further towards a zero waste economy has assembled, and is seeking others who are interested in helping with this aim as well.

Zero Waste is a philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. No trash is sent to landfills. The process recommended is one similar to the way that resources are reused in nature. Zero Waste is a goal that is both pragmatic and visionary, to guide people to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are resources for others to use,” explains a Wikipedia definition of Zero Waste.

One of the first initiatives that the group will develop is a Working towards Zero Waste Endorsement Initiative for local events, businesses, churches, and groups. The program is meant to be inspirational, educational, voluntary, and practical, with different levels that participating members can achieve.

The Working towards Zero Waste Endorsement Initiative is seen as a part of an evolving community quest that aligns with one of the municipality’s Sustainability Action items, “Strive towards a zero-waste economy and continue to be a leader in waste diversion through education and improved waste services.”

Besides the obvious goal of this proposed initiative, it tickles me to no end that the Working towards Zero Waste Endorsement Initiative came from Ms. McNally’s Grade 2-3 class at Meaford Community School. During Earth Week 2015 the kids presented a play Waste Wizard Saves the World; a good, better, best scenario for diverting waste. It really feels right that youth should be the inspiration for this effort,” said Lindy Iversen, an interested citizen.

Volunteers are currently being sought to work as a team on the Working towards Zero Waste Endorsement Initiative, which entails developing the criteria for the levels of and a plan for rolling out the Working towards Zero Waste Endorsement Initiative, to be rolled out at the 2017 Earth Week RE-Use & ECO-Fair.

The first meeting of the Working towards Zero Waste Endorsement Initiative working group will be on October 26 at 10 a.m. at the Meaford & St. Vincent Community Centre.

Please contact Jaden Calvert at jaden.calvert@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering your time and talents to be part of the team that will help propel the Municipality of Meaford towards a zero waste economy and/or for more information.
