Georgian Bay Community School (GBCS) will soon be filled with strumming guitars and youthful voices as students prepare for the first Coffee House of this school year.
On Friday, October 14, GBCS students look forward to sharing their talents with an audience of friends, family and community members.
Coffee Houses offer students a chance to showcase their musical abilities in a non-competitive, welcoming and warm environment. Acts have traditionally involved solo performers, duets, bands, and poetry readings.
Max Breadner, a Grade 10 GBCS student and a fan favourite in last year’s GBSS Idol, is looking forward to performing again this year. “Being a part of Coffee Houses has boosted my confidence on stage by all the support I have received. I felt more comfortable entering into more intense competitions after getting used to performing for a crowd. Since being a part of Coffee Houses I feel more at home in GBCS. I am excited to see Grade nines come out on Friday!”
Cry for Ophelia is a rock band that consists of all female members including lead vocalist Eden Young (Grade 11), who has been performing in Coffee Houses since she was in Grade 9. “I have always enjoyed singing for an audience and have been doing it since I was in elementary school. My friends and I decided to start a band years ago, and we have been playing ever since. Coffee Houses were a great way to practise playing for many people and for us to grow our skills as a band over time. Our band entered GBSS Idol last year and we ended up placing in the top eight. It was a great accomplishment for us and we anticipate the year to come.”
Music teacher Patrick Delaney is thrilled to once again run Coffee Houses. “Every year I am astonished of the amount of talent we have here at GBCS. We have been doing Coffee Houses since 2000 and each year I am more amazed. I am looking forward to seeing new faces on stage and a fantastic start to this year!”
The show takes place in the cafeteria on Friday, October 14 at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 with all proceeds going to benefit the GBCS music program.
