The Municipality of Meaford is holding a Special Meeting of Council on the proposed expansion to the Niagara Escarpment Plan on October 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Woodford Hall.
Municipal staff will be presenting a report to Council on the potential impacts of the proposed changes, and municipal comments which will be submitted to the Niagara Escarpment Commission (NEC) by their current deadline of October 31.
The Municipality has requested that the NEC extend the commenting period by at least 12 months, to allow affected residents more time to evaluate the impacts on their property and provide meaningful comments.
The NEC has proposed adding 32,559 hectares of land in Grey County to the Niagara Escarpment Plan. About 2/3 of this proposal (21,323 hectares) is located in the Municipality of Meaford. Additional lands in Georgian Bluffs (4,279 hectares), Town of the Blue Mountains (4,464 hectares) and Grey Highlands (2,358 hectares) have also been proposed, and the NEC would also like to change existing land use designations in some areas.
“We feel many residents are still in the dark about these changes and what they might mean for their homes” said Mayor Barb Clumpus. “We need more time to hear from the residents involved, since it is their future development and property values that will be affected.”
Comments can also be provided directly to the NEC at planreview@escarpment.org or by mail to:
